Financial Technology Acquisitions: A Year in Review

The financial for sale sign 2technology sector has not been without its fair share of acquisitions in 2010. Some of the bigger and more talked about acquisitions this year include Sybase’s purchase of Aleri, Broadridge’s acquisition of City Networks, MSCI’s acquisition of RiskMetrics and the recent acquisition of Sophis by Misys. Thomson Reuters went on a buying spree with a total of four acquisitions closely followed by Broadridge with three. Wall Street Systems, Temenos, and SunGard also have a couple of acquisitions to their names this year. In total, I counted 41 notable financial technology acquisitions, but please let me know if I’ve left anything significant out!

January 2010

Triple Point Technology acquires Enerbility Software GmbH, a provider of back-office processing solutions to the energy trading industry

Temenos acquires Viveo Group, a French provider of core banking systems

SS&C Technologies, Inc. acquires Tradeware Global Corp, a broker-neutral solution provider for electronic access to global equity markets

February 2010

First Derivatives acquires Cognotec, an Ireland-based FX dealing systems provider

Ipreo acquires compliance certificates collection service from Markit, a provider of independent data, valuations and trade processing

Lightspeed Financial acquires Noble Trading, a discount trading firm

Thomson Reuters acquires Aegisoft, a US-based provider of electronic trading and testing tools

SunGard acquires Inmatrix, an Australian-based provider of credit risk analysis and business forecasting solutions

Icap acquires outstanding shares of TriOptima, a Sweden-based provider of post trade infrastructure for OTC derivatives market players from buy-side institutions to global dealers.

March 2010

Polaris Software Lab Limited acquires IndigoTX, a SaaS company that provides GO TX, an enterprise brokerage solution for the securities market on a pay per use model

Brady plc acquires the commodities division of Viveo Switzerland SA

Advent Software acquires Goya, a provider of software solutions for fund managers and fund distributors

MSCI Inc acquires RiskMetrics Group, a provider of risk management and corporate governance products and services

StatPro takes full ownership in SiSoft, a web-based Composites solution

April 2010

Wall Street Systems acquires assets of Speranza Systems, a SaaS solution for electronic bank account management

Six Telekurs purchases evaluated pricing business from CSV,Inc.

May 2010

Silver Lake and Warburg Pincus acquires financial market data, analytics and related solutions provider Interactive Data

Thomson Reuters acquires Point Carbon A/S, a Norwegian-based leading provider of trading analytics, news and content for the energy and environmental markets

June 2010

Broadridge acquires CityNetworks, a US-based global middle and back office solutions and services provider

Fiserv acquires AdviceAmerica, a provider of integrated advisor solutions to financial institutions and independent advisors

Markit acquires Wall Street On Demand, a provider of services in the design, development and hosting of financial services websites, reports and tools

Wall Street Systems acquires City Financials, a corporate treasury specialist

Trading Technologies acquires TickIt Trading Systems, LLC

Thomson Reuters acquires Complinet, a compliance information resource

GFI Group acquires Kyte, a provider of clearing, broking, settlement and back-office services to proprietary traders, brokers, market makers and hedge funds

SunGard acquires Fox River Execution, a broker dealer that provides algorithmic trading technology and execution solutions

ConvergEx acquires LDB Consulting, a company that develops software that assists in the computation and optimization of capital charges, including security haircuts and margins

UPDATE: Nasdaq OMX acquires trading technology company FTEN

UPDATE: ConvergEx Group acquires RealTick, a multi-broker, cross-asset electronic execution platform, from Barclays Bank PLC

With just under three weeks to go before the New Year, we could still see a couple more acquisition announcements before the year is over. It will be interesting to see, however, who the buyers and sellers will be next year. Considering we are seeing some extra cash floating around in the fintech space, my prediction is that we’ll see more than 41 companies on the 2011 list. What are your 2011 M&A predictions?
